Engineers Australia Excellence in Journalism Award.
The aim of the award is to:
Widen understanding and raise the profile of Engineering as a profession, and encourage the media to acknowledge the role of engineering and its diversity in key areas such as education, the environment, health, infrastructure, security, research and development and trade.
There is a single award for the “Engineers Australia Journalist of the Year” and commendations to worthy runners up.
Engineers Australia is the principal and sole sponsor of the award.

Submission Criteria and Guidelines
Winners will be selected based on excellence in reporting, contribution to broadening awareness of engineering issues, originality, incisiveness, ethics, research and production will all be assessed.
Topics might include:
Water policy – including the adequacy of water infrastructure, the use of recycled water in industry and water capture and storage.
Climate change – including more action for renewable energy technologies, improvements in energy efficiency and setting emissions targets.
Infrastructure – including planning, funding and national coordination.
Education - including the loss of emphasis on mathematics and science in both primary and secondary schools.
Engineering skills shortages – producing enough Australian engineers.
Research and development, manufacturing, broadband, health and trade related to engineering may also be included.
Eligibility and Submission Criteria
The award is open to all journalists including freelance journalists, who have been resident in Australia and working as journalists between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008.
Applicants must have at least two years experience in journalism.
Submitted work must be the original work of the applicant and published or broadcast between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2008.
Joint applications will be accepted. (NB. Prize will be split).
Submissions may be in any medium.

Submissions are to include a cover letter with a brief statement backgrounding the submission and a current CV of the applicant and 4 copies of the submission. Submissions will not be returned. TV submissions must include a DVD plus a transcript. Radio submissions must include a CD plus transcript.
Applicants who have received any financial or in kind sponsorship or support from any corporation or organisation in relation to their entry must declare all details and any potential conflict of interest.
Closing date for submissions is June 30 2008.

Prize Structure
The overall winner will receive AUD$5000 and a certificate plus have their name permanently displayed on the awards honour board in the club.
Commendations receive a certificate.
