With a view to providing maximum encouragement to German Embassyorganisations and individuals interested in presenting German affairs to Australian audiences, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the National Press Club are once again offering a grant to Australian Journalists who are members of the National Press Club.

Grant to be awarded by the Federal Republic of Germany

2007's winner was Chris Johnson, whose winning entry outlined a journalistic project on examining Germany’s expertise in renewable energy technologies.  He was presented with the award on 28 March 2007 on the occasion of the National Press Club address by British economist and former Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank Sir Nicholas Stern.


The 2008 German Grant for Journalism will be awarded to a writer or an editor of an electronic broadcasting program whose project of journalistic work involves research in Germany in the areas of:

a) Political issues, e.g. security policy/counter-terrorism, EU integration, federalism
b) Social issues, e.g. health management, multiculturalism/freedom of religion
c) Environmental issues, e.g. biodiversity/biotope protection, animal welfare
d) Miscellaneous

Entrants should present a project to be carried out in Germany before the end of 2008. Funding and active support will be provided by the German Government which will meet the costs of business class travel between Australia and Germany and also of accommodation for the stay of two weeks in Germany. In addition to hotel accommodation, meals, all travel within Germany and interpreter/guide services are covered as well, for a program organised in accordance with the wishes and needs of the grant’s winner.

Applicants should provide the assessment panel with a comprehensive, well developed outline of the project to be carried out in Germany. Three hard copies of all material submitted are required, including video and audio material as appropriate. Alternatively, applications may be submitted electronically.
Applicants should also submit a brief CV and a description of their previous work. Further they are asked to indicate how and where they propose to publish or broadcast their finished project, including a letter of support from their editor.

The assessment panel will be convened by the National Press Club. It will take account of such factors as provided detail in the project outline, originality and significance of the basic subject matter in its context, and the prospects of its successful completion and publication or broadcast.

German Grant for Journalism 2007 Awarded to Chris Johnson

Mr Chris Johnson, Federal Political Reporter for The West Australian at the Parliamentary Press Gallery, has been awarded the German Grant for Journalism 2007 offered by the German Embassy in association with the National Press Club of Australia.

The Ambassador Chris Johnson & Martin Lutzof the Federal Republic of Germany to Australia, Martin Lutz, will present the award to Chris Johnson on the occasion of the National Press Club address by British economist and former Senior Vice-President of the World Bank Sir Nicholas Stern on March 28, 2007 in Canberra. Sir Nicholas is also the author of the Stern Review which gained global attention for Stern’s views of the impact of climate change.

Ambassador Lutz will congratulate Chris Johnson on his winning entry which outlines a journalistic project on examining Germany’s expertise in renewable energy technologies. The project will include interviews with German officials, representatives of leading companies, industry associations and the media in Germany. The Ambassador will convey to Mr Johnson the invitation by the German Government to visit Germany for a two week research trip to implement his project.

The annual German Grant for Journalism has been offered to journalists of the print and electronic media from Australia since 1986 with the aim to provide maximum encouragement to organisations and individuals interested in presenting German affairs to Australian audiences.

The award is granted on the basis of submissions of projects of journalistic work involving research in Germany. In selecting the winner, the assessment panel takes account of such factors as details provided in the project outline, originality and significance of the basic subject matter in its context and the prospects of successful completion and publication or broadcast. The winner is then invited to carry out his or her project in Germany with funding and active support by the German Government.

The grant includes the costs of business class travel between Australia and Germany, and of a two week stay in Germany for a program organised in accordance with the wishes of the winner and facilitated by interpreter/guide services.
