Winner of the inaugural Universities Australia Higher Education Media Award 2010, John Ross of Campus Review with special guest Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
Universities Australia (formerly the Australian Vice Chancellors' Committee - AVCC) is the peak industry body representing Australia’s universities. Universities Australia has partnered with the National Press Club of Australia to present annual higher education media awards that reward and recognise excellent journalism and communication that covers key issues in higher education including the economic and social benefits emanating from Australia's universities to the government, industry and the community in general.
The awards are open to employed and freelance media professionals, or writing and production teams, who write/broadcast, on higher education policy, university teaching and research, and/or on the work of individual academics and institutions.
In each category, journalists are invited to submit entries (published Jan - Dec 2009) that consists of four copies of a single story or a portfolio of up to 3 (maximum) stories in the following formats
* print stories
* tapes, DVDs or pod/vodcasts of broadcast stories
* live links/ or DVD downloads of online stories
1. Award for excellence in communicating knowledge of the University sector
2. Award for excellence in communicating research and innovation issues
3. Award for excellence in communicating teaching and learning issues
4. Award for excellence in communicating equity and access, social inclusion or indigenous issues
5. Higher education journalist award of the year
Awarded to the entry deemed most outstanding of all entries.

THE JUDGING PANEL
Ken Randall OAM
Ken was appointed to the Board of Directors in 1975 and has been re-elected each year since.
He has reported and commentated on Australian politics and business over many years for radio, television and newspapers, including several major overseas titles and the founding years of The Australian. He also has extensive experience in public relations, media consulting and training.
He has served in all executive positions on the Board, been President since 1991 and been a member since then of most judging panels for the wide range of journalism awards associated with the Club.
His Order of Australia award in 1997 was for service to public affairs and journalism, largely due to his years of dedicated service to the National Press Club.
Malcolm Colless
Mr Colless began his career in 1962 on The Daily Mirror. In 1969 he joined The Times in London, returning to Australia in 1972 to work on The Australian.
He was appointed The Australian’s chief political correspondent in Canberra in 1977.
In 1981, he moved into management, as general manager of Tamworth Newspaper Co Ltd, publisher of the Northern Daily Leader in 1983, Mr Colless returned to Sydney to play a similar role at Channel 10, then owned by News Limited.
In 1985, Mr Colless went to China to set up a bureau for The Australian. Later in the mid-1990s, he was part of the team that established a unique on-line joint-venture between News and The People’s Daily in Beijing. In 1987, he was appointed managing director of News Limited community newspaper business.
The following year, Mr Colless was appointed managing director of Herald & Weekly
Times Limited, the publisher of the Herald Sun. During his tenure, he oversaw the launch of Sunday newspapers in Melbourne and the merger of the Herald and The Sun News Pictorial.
In 1991, Mr Colless moved back to Sydney to take up the position of director, corporate development, which saw him play a leading role in the establishment of pay-TV in Australia and the transition to online platforms through News Interactive, the forerunner to News Digital Media. He also has been closely involved with News’ relationships with government at a federal and state level.
Mr Colless is the longest serving director of News Limited, being appointed to the board in 1991. Mr Colless is a long-standing member of the Press Club and in 2007 Mr Colless was awarded the National Press Club of Australia Golden Gong award for service to public affairs.
Laurie Wilson
Laurie has been a member of the Board since 1992, mainly in the position of Treasurer and is an integral member of the awards judging panel.
Laurie was Political correspondent for the Nine Network’s NIGHTLINE Program and is a principal of Stone Wilson Consulting, a Canberra management consultancy.
Has held a number of Directorships on the boards of both listed and unlisted public companies and in 2009 will host the Australian Public Affairs Channel (APAC).
