Australia's abundance of natural resources and its sound management of public finances have sustained its economic performance through a period of dramatic volatility in the global economy. It has dealt effectively with these cyclical challenges.

Yet the question remains—and it is a significant question indeed—how well Australia will deal with its structural challenges.

Andrew Liveris is Chairman and CEO of The Dow Chemical Company, which has a strong presence in Australia while taking a global perspective. Under Liveris, Dow has transformed itself to meet the imperatives of this new world: new, emerging markets, new investment in large developing economies, new competition and new technologies. But Liveris and Dow know that no single company can address these vast changes on its own. He has therefore taken an active role in collaborating with public policymakers, researchers, and academia on ways to re-shape investment, employment and economic outcomes.

Mr Liveris, an Australian, has brought his career experience to bear in helping to shape the US Government's approach to Advanced Manufacturing. He endeavours to do the same in his home country of Australia, where he feels a national manufacturing strategy is lacking, but is essential in order to drive growth and create prosperity.
