former Howard Government Minister for the Environment and former Australian Ambassador to the UN, Robert Hill, address the NPC in Science Week in August.  We are requesting the opportunity for Robert Hill to deliver an address on "The Reality of Low Carbon Living" on Wednesday 15th August as a Keynote Event in Science Week.
Robert Hill is now Chairman of the CRC for Low Carbon Living, a new CRC which is based at University of NSW. It received its funding approval in November last year and has recently commenced its work.
The CRC for Low Carbon Living brings together key property, planning and policy organisations working with leading Australian researchers from several universities to develop new social, technological and policy tools for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment.
"The CRC will help unlock barriers to cost-effective carbon saving opportunities, empower communities and facilitate the widespread adoption of local renewable energy," says Professor Prasad, Program Director of Sustainable Development in the Faculty of Built Environment. "This will enable the sector to contribute to Australia's greenhouse gas emission reduction targets while maintaining industry competitiveness and improving quality of life."
Robert Hill was a member of the Australian Senate from 1981 to 2006, representing South Australia. He was educated at the University of Adelaide and the London School of Economics, where he gained a masters degree in law.
Robert Hill was Leader of the Government in the Senate from March 1996 until his resignation in January 2006. He was Minister for the Environment 1996-98, Minister for the Environment and Heritage 1998-2001 and Minister for Defence from November 2001 to January 2006.
In July 2005 the Coalition parties took control of the Senate and Hill became the first Government Leader in the Senate since 1981 to command a majority in the chamber. In January 2006 he announced his resignation from the Parliament.
Hill was Australian Ambassador to the United Nations for Australia from 2006 - 2009.
In July 2009, Hill was appointed by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as Chairman of the Australian Carbon Trust. He is also Chancellor of the University of Adelaide and Adjunct Professor in Sustainability at the United States Studies Centre.
I believe Robert Hill will have some interesting perspectives on the Carbon Pricing debate and the Coalition's policy alternative.
