"Delivering a better mental health system for all Australians"
Better mental health needs new money and reform – The Minister will explain how the Gillard Government is delivering both.
Mark Butler, the Minister for Mental Health and Ageing will deliver a speech on the Government’s mental health reform package and explain why Labor is in it for the long haul.
The Hon Mark Butler MP was elected to Federal Parliament in 2007 representing the electorate of Port Adelaide. In September 2010, he was appointed the Australian Minister for Mental Health and Ageing.
Before entering Parliament, Mark worked for 15 years in the Liquor Hospitality and Miscellaneous Union (LHMU) - including 11 years as State Secretary – representing thousands of workers within the aged care sector. He recognises the challenges of the existing aged care system and is passionate about aged care reform. Mark was also a Member of the South Australian Social Inclusion Board when it conducted a major review of the South Australian mental health system
In addition to assisting the Minister for Health and Ageing, Nicola Roxon, Mark has direct portfolio responsibility for a number of Health agencies including the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
He holds a First Class Honours Law degree, an Arts degree and a Masters degree in International Relations.
