JOINT PRESS RELEASE 26 July 2023
Angela Macdonald-Smith of the Australian Financial Review was awarded The German Grant for Journalism 2023
Canberra, 26/07/2023 - The prestigious German Grant for Journalism has been awarded to Angela Macdonald-Smith of the Australian Financial Review, for her proposal on 'German Energy (In)Dependence – The Role of Australia for Germany’s Energy Transition.'
The judges were highly impressed by Macdonald-Smith's proposal which "showed a deep understanding of the energy sector" and would make a "significant contribution to the public debate."
Macdonald-Smith is one of Australia's most experienced resource writers and is well-placed to use the German Grant for Journalism to explore the significant challenges facing both Germany and Australia as they embark on a clean energy transition.
The judges also noted, "Angela presented a strong application that was a clear first choice. Her experience and track record together with her focus on newsworthy angles in her project proposal left the judges with confidence that her reports from Germany will get a good run."
Macdonald-Smith will embark on a funded research trip to Germany in November 2023 by official invitation of the German Government to allow for in-depth information gathering on the specific subject of her proposal. She will also have her name permanently inscribed on the honour board at the National Press Club of Australia.
The German Grant for Journalism is awarded by the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany to Australia in collaboration with the National Press Club of Australia - a partnership that spans over more than three decades. The German Grant for Journalism was first awarded in 1986.
