Professor Brian Oldfield, Professor of Physiology, Monash University, Australia, President, Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity and World Obesity Federation, International Congress of Obesity (ICO) 2022 programme committee chair, will Address the National Press Club of Australia on 'Obesity - misunderstood, underdiagnosed and undertreated'.

Professor Brian Oldfield is a neuroscientist and obesity researcher interested in the control of appetite and body weight. He has a professorial appointment in the Physiology Department and Biomedicine Discovery Institute at Monash University.

Brian leads a research group that has wide ranging interests that extend from studies of anorexia nervosa on one hand to obesity on the other. Between these two poles, he and his team have focused on the key issues of energy expenditure and the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of weight loss surgery, both essential elements in the push to understand the biology of obesity.

Professor Oldfield also has long standing interests that extend beyond his scientific focus and involve him in organizations, committees and Societies that attempt to provide better information to different levels of the community, from government through health care practitioners to the general public, about the genetics and biology of obesity and, through this, why it is so difficult to maintain weight loss. He is driven by an intention to dismantle the stigma that is applied to those living with obesity and to promote the understanding that obesity is not a life choice but a complex and chronic disease process. He is the immediate past President of the Australian and New Zealand Obesity Society (ANZOS) and is the current President of the Asia and Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity (AOASO) as well as a Vice President of the World Obesity Federation (WOF). He has recently been appointed Editor in Chief of Obesity Reviews, the premier obesity research journal in the world. In the last year he has chaired several steering committees to better coordinate the care and treatment of those living with obesity in South East Asia, a part of the world where obesity and the burden of obesity is growing fastest.
