Tony became National Secretary of the Transport Workers Union of Australia in 2006. Before his election, Tony served as the State Secretary of the union’s New South Wales Branch.

He has previously worked in the transport industry as a waste worker, and as an industrial officer for the Queensland Branch of the Liquor Trades Union.

Tony is Oceania Chair of the International Transport Federation Road Division, and a member of the National Executive of the ACTU, the peak forum for union leaders in Australia.

Since 2011, he has served as the Senior Vice President of the Australian Labor Party.

He is a member of the Board of Advice for the Institute of Transport and Logistics Studies (ITLS) in the Faculty of Economics and Business at the University of Sydney, and is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union program with postgraduate qualifications in Industrial Law at the University of NSW.

As TWU National Secretary, Tony has led national campaigns on road safety, safe and secure skies, and worker’s rights to a decent job and fair pay and conditions.

In 2012 he led a national campaign to establish the Road Safety Remuneration Tribunal, a Federal agency with powers to intervene where economic pressure from clients has led to poor road safety outcomes.

This year he has been at the forefront of a campaign on behalf of aviation workers, including those affected by recent decisions of the Qantas Board.
