2024 European Union – Qantas Journalism Award

2024 European Union – Qantas Journalism Award

Application deadline: 29 April 2024, 5 PM AEDT

Join the ranks of Australia’s best journalists and apply for the EU-Qantas Journalist Award. This prestigious Award started in 1992 and is run in conjunction with National Press Club with business class travel to and from Europe courtesy of Qantas.

The Award is open to an Australian journalist of not less than three years of experience media, who can satisfy the selection panel that they would benefit from a working visit to the European Union. While the subject of the project proposal is open to the journalist’s particular interests, the proposed program must be based on current European-Australian themes, relevant to an Australian audience. The visit is expected to lead to or contribute to coverage on return and a report on the visit plus summary report on resultant coverage must be provided.

The aim is to increase understanding in Australia of European affairs by giving journalists the opportunity to examine issues of interest first hand.

The Award consists of a ten-day working visit to EU institutions and up to three Member States. Accommodation costs, a living allowance and travel within Europe are covered. The EU Delegation will assist the successful journalist in formulating a suitable program and ensure interviews are arranged at the most appropriate level.

This award comes at a critical time in global geopolitics and when the bilateral relations between the EU and Australia are growing extensively. Australia has made a significant contribution in terms of military aid, humanitarian assistance and enforcement of sanctions to support Ukraine. By extension, this is in support of Europe, democracy and the rules based order globally.

The trip must be ticketed by end of June 2024 and applicants should complete the program before the end of 2024.

How to apply

Applicants must submit their proposed topic covering European themes that are of interest to an Australian audience, as well as three examples of published work from the previous 12 months and have their employer's written recommendation, and confirmation to participate in the program.

Selection is based primarily on the theme and demonstrated interest to the Australian audience. Originality and innovation is highly valued.

Journalists should outline which media platforms they will publish/broadcast on, including the use of social media.

Deadline for applications is COB Monday 29 April 2024.

*Travel must occur via direct flight to Rome between June and October 2024.
