The Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO

Age Discrimination Commissioner
Building a better cultural inheritance for an ageing Australia

Wednesday, 28 June 2023

The National Press Club of Australia

The Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO, Age Discrimination Commissioner, will Address the National Press Club of Australia.

The biggest transfer of wealth in history is set to happen over the next 20-30 years as the assets of war babies (the Silent Generation) and Baby Boomers are passed on to younger generations. At the same time, our population will become the oldest it’s ever been with around 1 in 5 Australians aged over 65. Together these phenomena have massive consequences for Australia. Australia’s Age Discrimination Commissioner the Hon Dr Kay Patterson AO will unpack these implications as well as what needs to be done by governments, communities and families to protect the rights and wellbeing of all older Australians, now and into the future. With her term ending in July, the Commissioner will also provide a retrospective of her achievements as Commissioner and highlight some challenges which lie ahead

She has been a Director and Vice President of Interplast Australian New Zealand, a leader and Council and Executive Member of Girl Guides Victoria, and was a member of Monash University Council for 20 years. She was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2016.

The Commissioner will also discuss:

  • The impact of ageism on older people
  • The rising problem of elder abuse
  • The growing crisis of homelessness among older women
  • The need to increase employment opportunities for older people
  • Harmonising Australia’s EPOA framework
  • The need for older people to plan ahead by organising wills and enduring documents
